RE: New Productivity Software
Hi folks,
As per previous discussions. The new system is now up and running and should have been installed on your computers overnight. Remember, it monitors the emotion in your voice to help you engage with customers and provides performance feedback on how well you are doing. Eventually, it'll replace our customary staff/supervisor performance reviews. See you all at the meeting at 9:45 and I'll talk you through it in more detail and you can ask any questions.
Happy selling!
Liz]
[[Close email?| 4. Workplace: meeting]]You rush to the meeting and sit through Liz's explanation of the system. Your attention wanders but you get the gist: it's a kind of automated assistant for your calls; it monitors your voice and gives you tips on how to improve engagement with the customer. Liz gave some examples of how it might encourage you to slow down or let you know if you are coming across as agitated or bored. At the same time, it creates a profile that keeps a running evaluation of your performance which feeds back to [[Liz and her bosses.| 4. Workplace: pause point]] Sam is happy to share their experience of using the system.
'I've only trialled it for a week but it seems to work well. You just hop on your calls as usual and every now and again a little image pops up on the screen to let you know to slow down or make your voice sound enthusiastic, silly things like that. It's been really great for our evaluations too: I finally had something concrete to discuss with Liz. It turns out that my calls have been getting shorter, I've been getting more positive feedback from customers and its generally just been really helpful. Even made a bit more commision while I was using it too.'
Sam sounds impressed, but you can see Morgan [[shaking their head slightly. |4. Workplace: negative]]Morgan describes their experience with the system:
'I mean, I don't know, maybe it's just not set up for me. I don't fit the 'model employee' or something. I felt I was talking in my usual way, which I think works well, but I kept getting alerts saying 'too flat' and 'show more empathy'. It was really distracting. And then in my evaluation, Liz kept saying that the data was showing that I was coming across as too aggressive. I tried to show her my sales figures, even some previous feedback from happy customers, but she didn't seem to want to listen. Maybe it was just picking up my irritation at the alerts, I don't know.'
You head back to your desk and [[wonder how the system will work for you.|4.v Workplace: thoughts]]The toy shop turns out to be in a nearby department store. After asking one of the shop assistants, you're able to locate the Dino-emotion toy. They seem to be popular as there are a couple of shelves stacked with them. You pick one up and [[look at the packaging| 5. Commercial: Buy toy?]]
<img alt="dino toy" src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1HHFQa7inyub2pg0Vd5C_MqIdhGZwHyzL" / width="100%" height="auto">You turn the box around to read the back of the packaging:

You do wonder where all this information is going though and whether it could be used against you.

You get to the hire car desk, and the sales assistant asks to see the booking reference and your ID. You provide this and he asks for a credit card to confirm the hire. However, when you try to pay for the transaction, you get a ~void~ message on the card reader. Annoyed, you try again but the same thing happens.
'Don't worry,' says the assistant. 'Maybe it's the machine.'
On failing a third time, you try your debit card instead. You just want to pay for the car, get the keys and start your journey. Fortunately, the new card works. The assistant smiles, hands you the keys and shows you to the car [[in the adjacent garage|6. Commercial (Cars): ii Cabin (neutral)]]When you sit in the driver's seat, the cabin lighting starts changing colours and the car chooses a radio station with classical music for you. At first, you don't really think about it, assuming new cars just seek to make the cabin a nice place to be.
However, you soon wonder if this was an AI system reacting to how it thinks you felt? You were still a bit stressed from your credit card not working when you first got it in.
Curious, you look in the small print of the manual. It says the car comes with an AffecTech smart camera in the cabin that reads how you feel and feeds this information to the in-car experience suite. Classical music is apparently the preset if it detects stress, anxiety or irritation.
You keep reading and realise that there is an option to [[keep the AI system on|6.iii.a]] or [[turn it off.|6.iii.b]]After an hour or so of driving, you start to feel a bit drowsy. You notice the cabin temperature drop slightly, which keeps you a little more alert. However, the effect doesn't last long. It had been a long week.
The music gets quieter, and a voice, similar to your home-hub assistant, comes out of the car speakers:
'(text-colour:#f08c00)[In-cabin sensors have noticed you are feeling tired. We suggest you stop for a break. There is a service station in 2.2 miles. Would you like to re-route?]'
You think that it's probably not a bad idea and respond, [['yes'.| 6. Commercial (Cars): Negative]]You feel much better for the cup of coffee and a short break. However, as you are rejoining the main road, a car pulls out abruptly in front of you. You have to swerve slightly to avoid them. You know they are too far away to see but you can't help yourself and wave your fist in the direction of the other driver.
A voice cuts off the podcast you were listening to:
'(text-colour:#f08c00)[In-car sensors detect you may be angry. You are reminded to keep two hands on the wheel when driving. You may be in violation of your hire-car rental terms if you do not drive with due care and attention.]'
You put both hands back on the wheel and the podcast resumes. You concentrate on the road ahead.
Fortunately, Clare and John's house isn't much further. As you get up to move, a bus pulls in but you realise it's heading in the wrong direction. Flustered, you check your timetable and realise you're waiting by the [[wrong bay| 2.iv.a Policing positive]]. You move down, stepping over someone's bags in the aisle, and find a seat towards the back of the bus.
You check your watch again and silently thank the station attendant; you might just make it to work on time, depending on the traffic.
Your thoughts turn to the man being intercepted. You wonder about the merits of being stopped because of looking angry.
[[After staring idly out of the window for a few minutes, you get out your phone. | 3.i Civic]] You are not sure how you feel about it. You know a couple of your colleagues were involved in a trial of the system. You forward them your boss's email, adding a (dropdown: 2bind $Like,"smiley face","sad face")emoji, and asking if they want to grab a quick coffee so you can chat to them about the system. They both email back and you arrange to meet in the break room [[in five minutes.|4. Workplace: positive]]Before stumping up your hard-earned cash, you decide to look up some reviews online. There seem to be a number of 5-star and 1-star reviews so you select a couple at random to see what other people have been saying.

Bought this for my son but it's been a gift for us too. He treats it like it’s real, so sweet to see, but you can understand why – it’s so responsive and reacts to how he’s feeling, nudging his hand for attention or making a funny set of grunts. It’s been great for us as well, letting us know if he’s down or anything, or just how he’s feeling, and we can get support from AffecTech and other parents. Highly Recommend.
